As temperatures drop across the North, Mushkegowuk Council’s Health Department is calling on the community to help keep community members warm this winter. The organization is hosting a Winter Clothing Donation Drive, collecting warm clothing and cold-weather gear for individuals who are facing harsh conditions without proper clothing.

Donations will be accepted November 2–4, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 11 Elm Street N., Timmins.

Organizers are asking for the following items:

  • Coats and jackets (all sizes)

  • Sweaters, hoodies and long sleeves

  • Warm socks (new) and boots

  • Hats, gloves and scarves

  • Gently used blankets, sleeping bags and cold-weather gear

  • Underwear (new)

All items should be clean and in good condition.

In mid-November, the donated clothing will be distributed to community members along with a warm meal of chili, sandwiches, bannock, facial tissue and band aid kits. Mushkegowuk Health staff members will be driving around the community, in partnership with the Mushkegowuk Firekeepers, to distribute the clothing to those in need.

The initiative is being led by Shayanne Beach, Patient Advocate with Mushkegowuk Health. In her role, Beach works to ensure clients receive quality health care and helps them navigate the complex health and social systems. She sees first-hand how basic needs like warmth and shelter affect a person's overall health and well-being.

"Every day, our team members work with clients who are trying to manage their health while also worrying about how they'll stay warm," said Beach. "Good health starts with having your basic needs met. A warm coat, a pair of boots or a hot meal can make a real difference in someone's winter. We're grateful to everyone who gives, and we hope this drive brings our community together to care for one another."
