Taking care of your mental health does not have to be hard or complicated. Small actions you do every day can make a big difference. You don’t need big changes or perfect habits. Little steps, done often, can help you feel calmer, stronger, and more supported.
Below are simple strategies that support mental health that you can try.
Caring for Your Thoughts and Feelings
These steps help you notice what you need and how to respond with kindness.
Check in with yourself
Take a moment each day to ask, “How am I feeling?”
Naming your feelings can help you understand what you need. You may need rest, connection, movement, or support.
Try grounding techniques
Grounding helps calm your mind when you feel stressed or overwhelmed.
You can try:
• Putting your feet flat on the floor
• Noticing things you can see, hear, or feel
These small actions help bring you back to the present moment.
Be kind to yourself
Talk to yourself the way you would talk to someone you care about.
You might say:
“It’s okay to make mistakes.”
“I’m doing my best right now.”
Kind self‑talk can reduce shame and self‑criticism.
Reach out for support
It’s okay to ask for help. Support can come from family, friends, co‑workers, Elders, helpers, counsellors, or community resources. Reaching out shows strength, not weakness.
Caring for Your Body to Support Your Mind
Your body and mind are connected. Simple physical habits can help improve your mood and energy.
Drink enough water
Staying hydrated helps you think clearly and feel better. When you don’t drink enough water, you may feel tired, foggy, or irritable.
Practice self‑care
Self‑care looks different for everyone.
It can include:
Getting enough sleep
Singing to your favourite song
Journalling
Doing something creative
Tidying your space
These small actions help reduce stress.
Move your body
Movement helps release tension and improve your mood. This can be:
Walking in nature
Stretching
Dancing
Working out
Light movement — even a few minutes — also helps.
Give yourself permission to rest
Rest is important. You don’t need to earn it.
Rest might look like:
Saying “no” to extra tasks
Going to bed early
Putting your phone away for a while
Watching a favourite movie
Rest helps your mind and body recover.
Small Steps Add Up
Every small action you take to care for yourself matters.
Checking in with your feelings, drinking water, taking a short walk, or giving yourself a moment to breathe -- these simple steps support your mental health over time.
You deserve care, kindness, and rest, one small step at a time.
