Fashion Gathering to Showcase Rich Indigenous Culture and History

TIMMINS, ON – Mushkegowuk Council’s Health Department is hosting an Indigenous Fashion History and Teachings Gathering on Friday, April 17 at 6PM at the Northern College Gymnasium. This event brings together Indigenous fashion, ceremony and cultural teachings to celebrate Indigenous identity and resilience.

The event is being held the evening before Northern College’s 25th Annual Traditional Powwow, taking place throughout the weekend of April 18.

Dolores Gull, Traditional Healer Cultural Practitioner with Mushkegowuk Health, has been working on organizing the event with a volunteer planning committee for months “our goal is create a safe, welcoming and fun environment for the public to learn about Indigenous fashion and teachings. This event aims to educate and celebrate indigenous fashion culture.

“This gathering is about sharing knowledge and creating understanding,” said Gull. “We want people to know that our ceremonies are living traditions. They are rooted in community, and there is space to learn about Indigenous culture, no matter your gender, creed or race. The event is open to everyone.”

The evening will begin with an opening prayer, pipe ceremony and traditional drumming and dancing, followed by teachings on sacred rites of passes such as the Welcoming Ceremony, Walking Out Ceremony, Snowshoe Walk, First Kill, and Berry Fast. Additional teachings throughout the evening will explore ceremonies including the Sweatlodge Ceremony, Full Moon Ceremony, Sundance Ceremony and Ancestry Feast Ceremony.

A portion of the evening will feature a runway showcase from talented Indigenous designers with ties to the Mushkegowuk territory. Each designer will bring forward unique designs highlighting themes of resilience, cultural pride, and connection to the land. Pieces such as ribbon skirts and shirts will be showcased not only as fashion, but as powerful symbols of identity, strength, and cultural reclamation.

The event is free to attend. Doors open at 5:15 PM and the event begins at 6PM.
