Epilepsy affects millions of people worldwide, yet stigma and misunderstanding still exist. By wearing purple, we stand in solidarity with individuals and families living with epilepsy.

What is Epilepsy?
Epilepsy is a condition that affects the brain and causes repeated seizures. A seizure happens when there is a sudden burst of electrical activity in the brain. This can change how a person moves, feels, or behaves for a short time.
Epilepsy can affect about 1 in 100 people
In Canada, epilepsy can affect about 1 in 100 people. Epilepsy can affect people of all ages, backgrounds, and cultures.
What Can Cause Epilepsy?
Sometimes, the cause is known, but often it is not. Possible causes include:
Head injuries
Brain infections
Stroke
Genetics (family history)
Seizures can last from a few seconds to a few minutes.
How Can You Help Someone Having a Seizure?
Once a seizure has begun, you cannot stop it – just let it run its course.
Stay calm
Move objects away so they don't get hurt
Gently turn them on their side
Do not put anything in their mouth
Stay with them until the seizure ends
Call for medical help if the seizure lasts longer than 5 minutes, if it's their first seizure, they are injured or not waking up, if they are pregnant or if have diabetes
The brain almost always stops the seizures safely and naturally.
